A WEDDING MEDITATION

These are the words the Lord gave us for a couple we recently had the honor of marrying. We thought we’d share them with you.

You have chosen this day to enter into a holy covenant called marriage, an institution ordained by God, defined by God and overseen by God.

In today’s pop culture this sacred institution has been devalued by human selfishness and godlessness, but you have chosen to keep it holy, through your preparation, through your spiritual integrity and by this very ceremony we hold today, where Christ, himself, is the central figure and the One we worship in this act of holy matrimony.

Marriage is holy; It’s purpose is not for your happiness, but rather to demonstrate what the love of God looks like here in the earth. It is selfless, unconditional and always otherly-minded.

In a very real sense this ceremony is not primarily about you; it’s about Him, and witnessing to that love that only comes from above. You must never buy into the lie of this world that says “You have to do what will make you happy.” There are millions today who have bought that lie, and simply find more unhappiness, and devastation to those around them.

No, the way to happiness is not by doing what you think will make you happy, but rather by foregoing your pursuit of happiness to pursue the plans and purposes of God. Happiness is never to be the goal of life, but rather, it is the result of living a Godly life.

The purpose for this marriage is not your happiness, but your happiness will be the result of a healthy and Godly marriage.

Your purpose from this day forward is not to please each other, but rather, to please God with the way you love and treat each other.

And if ever we’re at a loss for what love looks like, all we need to do is to look to the cross, where we see love in all its fullness.

For Christ loved us, by sacrificing all he had –himself- for us. It’s at the cross that love begins. If we are not fully surrendered to Him who loved us first, we can never have that love for each other.

For love is of God and it flows from His throne, and only those who know Him can really know love. Oh yes, people may be able to live together in a mutual use agreement, but it can never be that Godly sacrificial love upon which this holy institution stands.

Love without sacrifice is simply use. This covenant we enter into today is not an agreement to use each other, but rather to give to each other, unconditionally, that love that God has given us in Christ Jesus. It’s all about Him.

Even in this service God grants yet another opportunity to receive His love. It’s never too late. If anyone would ask Him to forgive their sins, even this day, and choose to accept His forgiveness, and give their lives to Him fully, and unconditionally, they too, can receive of His love and truly be a new creation. For God is not a respecter of persons. He desires that all would come to know His love.

In this time, in this place, His Spirit is here to enter into any willing an open heart that will say, “Yes Lord, come into my heart, and give me a new life that I might pursue you and find happiness as a result.”

He is here to give new life, new hope for marriages yet in trouble today. As simplistic as it may sound, Jesus really is the answer, and this ceremony, this holy covenant you enter into today is a witness to the power of that love first seen on Calvary’s cross.

Never let Christ take any other place than that central place in your lives and in your marriage. Always seek His will, and His purposes, and you will find true happiness the only place it is to be found --in Him.

Question to ask each other: How has our marriage reflected the ideas of this meditation? How has it not? How can we draw closer to Him who is love that our marriage can be a witness to that love in the earth?

Prayer For Both of Us: Lord help us to come back to the principles upon which this holy institution is meant to stand. Help us to come to the cross with a new willingness to surrender all that we have, as we reflect in the fact that you surrendered all for us. Help us do no less, so that by the love we have for each other the world will see Jesus.
