THE POWER OF TWO - HOW TO
"So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall!" -1 Corinthians 10:12
Last week's devotional was 'THE POWER OF TWO" Apparently it hit home with many, but one of the e-mails I received seemed to say, "Yeah, it sounds good, but how do you really make it work?" So I want to take the next few devotionals to talk about the "How To" when it comes to working together as a team.
The first principle to be applied must be: Unless I've heard an audible voice from God -and it really was God and not an impostor- there's always a chance I could be wrong. So let me not jump to conclusions or judgments.
I know that could be a pretty tough sell, especially for those of us with a lion temperament (cholerics) who never think we are wrong, but as smart as we may be there's always a chance there's more to the issue than we've considered, and we may not have the full picture, therefore there is a chance, though small as it may be, that you may be wrong. You see, knowledge tells you you know it all, but wisdom tells you, "Not so fast; you may not have all the facts." So it is with wisdom that we relate to one another, and even submit one to another (Ephesians 5:21) and have forbearance one for another, and we wait until all the facts are in. Then the best we can say is, "It seems to me that (fill in the blank)" Now please don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that everyone can see things in their own way and there is no right or wrong. There certainly is a right and a wrong, but because of our fallen nature and our limited perception and understanding, we may not get the whole picture, or see what the other person sees, so let's reserve judgment until we can have dialogue, yes, that means the "C" word: communication! I know jumping to conclusions is a lot easier, but if you really want to operate as a team you'll have to be careful when you think you stand, less you fall, and relate to each other with that degree of forbearance and humility, realizing that the only one who can be sure He's right is God, and we are not Him.
Question for the Both of Us?: Do you think I jump to conclusions and make judgments before I hear your side of the story? Does it seem to you that I am open to change? Do I exhibit the humility that says, "I may not have all the answers; I need to hear from you."
Prayer For The Both Of Us: Lord, help us to walk in humility, forbearing with one another, reserving judgment until we can hear all sides. Help us to withhold judgment so that we can come to mutual agreement and work as a team -as one!
