BIGGER THAN BOTH OF US "Remember The Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes" --Nehemiah 4:14b Nehemiah spoke these words to his generation as they were preparing to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem in the midst of opposition in order to let them know that this was not just about their self interests. This was about fighting for something greater than themselves. It was about their marriages, their families and their nation. As we look around to see the breakdown of the American family it becomes clear that it is, once again, time to fight for our marriages our families and our nation. It's clear we are in danger of passing on to our children a nation in chaos. This is no time to let our pettiness keep us from closing ranks against the enemies of marriage and family. It's time to quit whining and fighting about meaningless issues. It's time to love one another as Christ loved us -just as we are- and let that love flow into a world desperately searching for answers in all the wrong places. It's time to let our children see the love of God in us. It's time to impact our communities for righteousness' sake. If we don't, our children will rise up to curse us for handing them a world in much worse shape than the world our parents handed us. Will our children rise up to bless us, or curse us? The answer will be determined by the choices we make today. Question for dialogue: In What ways have we let our self-interests keep us from allowing God's love to freely flow into the lives of others? What other couple can we help today, maybe by just offering a word of encouragement. Prayer for both of us: Lord, help us to set aside our selfishness and pride, to love each other, unconditionally, as you love us. Help us to reach out to another couple or family in trouble. Help us to be a light in a dark world. Empower us to fight for our marriage, our family and our nation. |
