TIME TO SOW

“The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.” Galatians 6:8

This past weekend we actually had some time to do a little planting. I planted seeds in a couple of trays of peat moss with the full expectation that in several weeks those seeds will produce little plants. I will reap what I sow. It’s just a law of nature that remains true whether I believe it or not.

So it is with relationships. What we reap will be the result of what we sow. I remember a mother who came into our office several years ago complaining about how her children didn’t respect her. As she was describing the situation she started working herself up into an angry frenzy referring to her children using every derogatory and curse word she could think of. I thought to myself, “She’s simply reaping what she has obviously sown.” She sowed disrespect; she’s now reaping it. To expect anything else would be like planting dandelions and expecting an apple tree. It just won’t happen. You will reap what you sow.

This holds true for all our relationships, especially the husband-wife relationship. Whatever we desire to see come from our spouse must first be sown. If I want respect, I must sow respect. If I want kindness, I must sow kindness. If I want my spouse to be concerned about my needs, I must sow a concern for his/her needs. I will reap what I sow, for good or for bad. It’s a law of relationships.

This time of year is a good time to give particular attention to what we sow, for surely we will reap in the months to come. Let us sow to please the Spirit. We have His promise that from that Spirit working in and through those we love we will reap a harvest of righteousness.

Question to ask each other: What do you believe I have been sowing into you these past weeks? What is it that we desire from each other and how can we sow it into one another’s hearts?

Prayer for the both of Us: Lord, help us to be aware of what it is that we are sowing into one another. Help us to sow only that which will please you, so that we can enjoy your presence, your love in our relationship and our family and friends will see a harvest of righteousness that will bring you glory.
