STATE OF “OUR” UNION
For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not
think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of
yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of
faith God has given you. -Romans 12:3
This is the time of year when we typically hear our President
deliver his “State of the Union” message. This can
serve as a reminder to examine the state of our union, the
condition of our marriage. No successful business can grow
without periodic self-examination to celebrate victories, and
identify those areas that need attention if the business is to
continue to grow and prosper. If this self-examination is
important for a typical business and even for our nation, how
much more important is it to examine our marriage and our family
life. After all, second only to our relationship with Christ,
this is the most important business we can be engaged in. The
apostle Paul encouraged the Roman Christians to make “sober
judgment.” We too, must make sober judgment concerning the
condition of our marriage. Sit down together and ask one another,
“How are we doing?” Scary question. We often
don’t ask the question because we don’t want to hear
the answer. We would rather live in la-la land pretending
everything is O.K., but that may not be the case. Better to deal
with it now, deliberately, as you are led by the Holy Spirit,
than to wait for the issues to rear up their ugly heads when
provoked by other spirits, not so holy!
Pick up a composition notebook and write down the victories of
the past year, and come up with some goals and plans for the new
year. Then join hands, and pray that God will help you fulfill
the goals you’ve listed. Jesus told us that if any two of
us should agree as to touching anything on earth so shall it be
done by our Father in Heaven. But we must take the initiative; we
must be courageous enough to look at our marriage with sober
judgment, and make some responsible decisions concerning our
future. Then next year we’ll have even more to celebrate as
we, again, consider the state of our union.
Question for the Both of us: How do you feel we
are doing? In what areas have you seen growth in our
relationship? In what areas have you seen things headed in the
wrong direction?
Prayer for Both of Us: “Lord, help us to
see the vision you have for us in the new year, and help us to
work together to see the state of our union continually grow, and
prosper so that the state of our union will be even better next
year, and you will receive the glory!
