HAPPY NEW YEAR!

“This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” –Lamentations 3:21-23

We’ve just said goodbye to a year that has brought tragedies, the likes of which we have never seen before, with the earthquakes in Pakistan, the Tsunami in the Indian Ocean and hurricanes on our own gulf coast. While many would think, “How can a loving God allow such tragedy?” the real question should be, “How is it that I have not been washed away, or otherwise destroyed like so many others?” It is because of His mercy that some of us are kept from such tragedy. In His mercy, He keeps us from what we deserve. You mean to say, we deserve tragedy? Worse! We deserve to be burning in Hell right now for we are all sinners and the wages of sin is still an eternal existence where “the worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.” In fact, Scripture tells us that Satan is the prince of this world, and was it not for God’s mercy we would all be living in a literal hell on earth. But God is good, and great is His faithfulness. He has given us yet one more year in which to enjoy His grace demonstrated in our natural world, and in our relationships with Him and with one another. This New Year comes in the form of a stewardship. What will we do with this New Year? Will we value what we have, especially in our relationships, and most importantly in the holy institution of marriage? Will we work to improve our relationships, so that in the love that we have one for another the world will see that we are His disciples? Will we work to reap a harvest of righteousness, or will we squander what God has given us like spoiled children, and set ourselves up for more loss? The choice, as always is ours; the power, as always, is His.

No matter what went on last year, the bottom line is we have been saved from destruction. No matter what went on last year, we now have a New Year to live a life that pleases Him. His blessings are new every morning, and great is His faithfulness. He is faithful to complete the work he has begun in us. Let’s just let Him do it in this brand-spanking New Year!

Question for the both of us: What is my prayer for you for the New Year? How would I like you to pray for me for the New Year?

Prayer for both of us: Lord, we thank you for your mercy that has granted us yet another year in which to reflect your love to a lost and dying world. Help us to bring life and love, beginning with our own marriage and our own family. We thank you for your great faithfulness that will perform it as we surrender to your will for our lives.
