CELEBRATE LIBERTY!
Galatians 5:1 It is for freedom that Christ has set us
free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened
again by a yoke of slavery.
This weekend we’ll celebrate the 230th anniversary of
our Declaration of Independence. Though we’ve been set free
from King George long ago, many couples are still under
oppression by the behavior patterns and interpersonal rituals
they’ve developed over the years. Behaviors and rituals
that have made healthy relationships impossible.
It’s time to declare “liberty” from our past
behaviors and rituals and learn to walk in newness of life. It
means a new way of living. It means choosing relationship over
ritual. It means putting the marriage in the #2 place in your
life. (God, being #1). It’s been said before,
“If you always do what you’ve always done,
you’ll always be what you’ve always been.”
If that’s good enough for you, then I guess you can
continue to live a life of frustration and misery, until you
leave this earth for Heaven or Hell. (You will spend eternity in
one of those two places.) I can’t think of anything more
tragic than living a life of misery here on earth, only to be
followed by an eternity in hell. How sad the consequences of
bondage!
But you have been set free to enjoy liberty. But liberty
isn’t the freedom to do what you want; it’s the
freedom to do what you ought to do according to God’s Word.
Please understand, no one is totally free. We can either choose
to be a bond servant to Jesus, a slave by choice, or we can be a
slave to Satan and our own sin by default. Which would you
prefer? There’s no middle ground.
Once we’re free in Christ we have the power resident in
us, in the person of the Holy Spirit, to live a life free from
the bondages and behaviors of our past. Yet it doesn’t come
automatically. We must choose to walk in freedom, or by our
indecision be burdened once again to the yoke of slavery.
This Independence Day proclaim your liberty from your past
destructive behaviors and choose newness of life. You have the
choice; God has the power.
Happy Independence Day!
